DISADVANTAGES
- people forced to move away (live in the place they are going to construct the dam)
- Destruction of natural fertility of soil, consequently farmers have to spend more money on pesticides and fertilizers
- destruction of natural environment (for building the dams, which causes wildlife loss)
- increase risk of earthquakes and landslides
- lower water levels accumulate pollutants, so there is less water life
yacyretá dam
location: between Argentina and Paraguay, in the Paraná river
Reasons for building it: The main aim of this dam was to generate hydroelectric energy, it also allows the navigation on the Parana river because, the flow of water has been reduced thanks to the dam.
problems:
- 1200 people complain and demand for payments because of the destruction of their homes
- people complain about poor living conditions in houses (relocation)
- thousand of people that had a job in those areas lost it (consequently thousands of people jobless)
- 100,000 hectares flooded because of the dam (biodiversity destruction)
- water supplies for human consumption polluted
- corruption complaints
- poor maintenance of the dam (falling apart)
